Juancheng Stony Meteorites from Shandong
One of the newest rocks added to the Earth! Interestingly foretelling the death of a former Chinese leader!
These stony meteorites fell down on February 15, 1997. Known as "Heze" for the first year, they are formally named Juancheng H5 Chondrite now, after the county name in Heze Region, Shandong Province. We cut some slices and saw a lot of metal particles inside. Chondrites are visible too. They are highly valuable and very difficult to get now, especially in whole specimens with fresh crust. They fell a couple of days before Deng Xiaoping, the former Chinese leader, died. Therefore many people in China considered the fall was the cosmic prediction of Dengs passing away.
The fusion crust is clear and black on most pieces, typically less than 1 mm think. The meteorites have magnetism, with higher specific gravity than common rocks. We have some samples for researchers and collectors.
